myLot Discussions on HOOTS| Ahhh! What A Beautiful Sound! | | This might be kind of a wacky discussion. But I'm here in front of my computer very late at night. It's quiet...no sounds save one that I can hear. The chirping of crickets...the first time I've noticed them all year long. Here I am in a city type environment and I guess I relish any indications of nature...the chirping of birds, watching large puffy clouds sail across the skies, watching the budding growths of trees as they wake up from a long winter's sleep. There's always been something about hearing crickets though...don't know why. Did you know I actually at one time had crickets as pets? Uh, yup. In some cultures crickets are actually considered lucky...then there is Charles Dickens short story "Cricket On The Hearth"In our "busy-ness" of everyday living we really do sometimes to stop and smell the roses..we have our agendas to meet, deadlines, the simple (or complex) day to day living. How many of us just sit back and become aware and "attuned" to nature's rhythms instead which always seems to be slower than ours...like a beckoning to just take a good time out?What sounds or sights of nature remind you of the simple pleasures of life? We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services an other large gatherings. As is the custom at all military bases, we stood to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going well until three-quarters of the way thru the National Anthem, the music stopped.Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments, and everyone would sit down and yell for the movie to begin. Of course, this is, if they had bothered to stand in the first place.Here in Irag, 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again and the Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. But again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect 1,000 Soldiers standing at attention to do???Frankly, I expected some laughter, and everyone would eventually sit down and wait for the movie to start. BUT NO!! | | Sooooo, I was sleeping, and then it happend.... | | Hi happy mylotters!! Since I am not able to sleep (I have been up since 1 a.m.), I thought I would write a little story for all of you wonderful, passionate cat lovers!!So, I had a bit of a long day yesterday. We had to drive into the city (it' about an hour's drive from where we live) and see a doctor and do some much needed errands. For me, that is quite a long day. So any hoots, I went to be rather early last night because I was so exhausted. I was sleeping pretty good until.....At around 1 a.m., this morning, two of my kids decided to "take it up a notch" as the phrase goes. They were literally going at each other so badly that it woke me and my husband up. I can usually sleep through anything mind you. My husband, on the other hand, is a really, really light sleeper!! So, I did attempt to go back to bed and go back to sleep, but then....THE GROWLING AND HISSING started. There was no turning back for me. | | Sometimes the Devil in me wants out! | | A couple of days ago, I was at the market with friends. On one of the stalls, the young Spanish stall holder was reaching something from a high rail for someone. He had to take down the price card, which was held in place with a long string, and he put it around his neck while he served the customer.So this handsome Spaniard is there with a 3 Euro price tag on him, and I just couldn't resist. I got out 3 euros, went up to him, and in my best Spanish said, 'What a bargain - here's my money. Are you coming with me now, or shall I come back when the market closes?' He laughed, took my arm, and we walked up the aisle, to hoots of laughter from the locals who'd heard the exchange. Then he gave me my money back and told me I could have him for nothing, as I was a beautiful lady. (I'm not really, but it made my day)My friends, who don't speak Spanish, but got the gist of what I said, couldn't believe I'd done it. I told them, sometimes, I have to let the Devil out, and this was one of them. | | Desperate friends - Are they friends? | | Friends are important - yeah, that's true. However, these people may just be taking advantage of you. I've had colleagues coming to me begging for help:[i]"Please, damsel in distress!"[/i] or[i]"Thanks for your help, I love you"[/i] - but reality is, they don't care two hoots about you when things are fine with them but not with you. I mean they're not strangers. You work with them, you see them in the office. They see you along the corridor, they just pass you by without greeting you. Yup, there are many who are "friends" and only a few who are friends - even fewer, trustworthy ones.What's your comment on this? Have you met people like that before? | | Cigarettes are alot worse than they ever were in the past | | They put crazy insane stuff in them.Lighter Fluid,Cyanide,Asbestos,Rocket Fuel,Fiberglass,Arsenic,and of course,Carbon Monoxide.It's not so much the tobacco but this other crazy stuff they lace em up with.

| | Italy through to the quarterfinals - now it's CHAOS here in my town! | | This has always stunned me ever since I moved to Italy over 30 years ago. Every time the national football team wins then EVERY person who owns a car takes it into the centre of the town he lives in and HOOTS HIS HORN for ages and ages. It's 11 pm here and many are already asleep but that makes no difference[em]shocked[/em][em]lol[/em]I say well done Italy but why this perfomance every time???How does your country celebrate when the national team wins? | |
